The Wireless
Fidelity Access Zone...where you can get in the
zone for high speed wireless internet access.
We have tons of information here and you can
find locations near you to "Get in the Wifi
Access Zone"... Are you in the Zone?
What is WiFi (wireless
fidelilty)? A local
computer network for communication between
computers; especially a network connecting
computers and word processors and other
electronic office equipment to create a
communication system between offices.
Wi-Fi
Short for "Wireless Fidelity." (Yes, it is
pretty much a rip-off of the term "Hi-Fi," or
High Fidelity, which refers to high-quality
audio or surround sound.) Wi-Fi refers to
wireless network components that are based on
one of the Wi-Fi Alliance's 802.11 standards.
The Wi-Fi Alliance created the 802.11 standard
so that manufacturers can make wireless products
that work with other manufacturers' equipment.
So, if you have a "Wi-Fi Certified" wireless
network card, it should be recognized by any "Wi-Fi
Certified" access point, and vice-versa. Why
there is a Wi-Fi Alliance and why they named the
wireless standard 802.11, I am not sure.
But with the
WifiAccessZone.com you can certainly get in
the zone!
What is WiFi? It is short for wireless
fidelity and is meant to be used generically
when referring to any type of 802.11 network
promulgated by the Wi-Fi Alliance, whether
802.11b, 802.11a, dual-band, etc.
Remember rotary dial phones? We evolved to touch
tone phone and then the first cordless phones.
WiFi is the same type of wireless technology as
the cordless phone in your house, but built for
your computer or other personal digital
assistant (PDA). WiFi is NOT cellular
technology. Your cell phone operates on
different, licensed, frequencies. The FCC made
available unlicensed frequencies allowing for
technology folks to start using a larger
spectrum of the airwaves. We now have 900 MHz
and 2.4 GHz cordless phones in our home because
of it. Computer manufactures are now using this
unlicensed space for connecting you to the
Internet and other technological resources. In
short, WiFi will connect your laptop to the
Internet without any wires.
What is WiFi? It is Wireless Networking and yes
it is contagious. WiFiAccessZone is now
deploying this technology into the public
spaces.
Still lost? How would you like to sit out on
your deck, enjoying the weather while at the
same time checking your email, stocks or
chatting with friends online? For most of us
this would require running our phone line, or
network line, onto the deck. Then the dog runs
through tripping over the wire, knocking the
laptop to the ground and spilling piping hot
coffee all over you.
Not with WiFi. Today a box the size of an
answering machine and costing no more than a
typical teenager's long distance bill can
distribute your Internet connection signal to an
area the size of a football field. A card not
much larger than the credit card your teenager
borrows receives this signal and, presto, you
now are surfing with no wires. Now you can sit
out on the deck with your laptop and pay the
credit card bill on-line, without worry of the
dog forcing you to change shorts.
This is not new technology; it has been around
for several years. It is viewed by most as a
grass-roots technology; adopted by the more
technologically savvy and those who love geeky
toys. Well, the grass roots have gotten some
mainstream attention. AT&T, T-Mobile and IBM
have spent millions of dollars and have
committed millions more for this technology.
Intel is now marketing a new processor, Centrino,
which is WiFi enabled. Dell, Gateway, Fujitsu,
HP, IBM (and so forth) are all embedding this
new processor into their products. The next
laptop or PDA your teenager buys with the credit
card they borrowed will probably have WiFi built
in.
The WifiAccess Zone supports the Global
Waypoint Registry (GWR) and thanks the GWR for
their assistance in marking Wifi Locations with
Authenticated
GPS
Waypoints.
